With lots of buzz about China Green Dam internet censorship, I must report proof that US internet media are not without censorship, far from it.
Today I commented a NY Times article on U.S. Pullout From Iraqi Cities Marked by Holiday.
I finished the comment with the following sentence
Don’t sell weapons to the Middle East (including Israel), it is like pouring oil on fire
Honestly I don’t think that sentence was offensive, and it was to the point because the article discussed military help to the Iraq government. The comment was posted, accepted and it was recommended by a good amount of readers.
30 minutes later, the comment was removed.
I tried again putting the comment, this time it was immediately posted, then immediately removed 5 minutes later.
I understand the need of comments moderation, but I really think that this case it is political censorship.
I have already come across it before, at my american firm, in 2003, the anti bush and anti-war web site Whitehouse.org was classified as a harmful site by the firewall.
So why are we complaining about potential censorship in China (officially it is parental controls) when we have the real thing at home on obviously a political basis ?
I am however heartened by the many comments of americans which don’t seem to be swayed by the heavily unbalanced media reporting, and often show the capacity for independent thoughts.
